I read this around 2004 and loved it, but man, I'd forgotten what a batshit crazy narrative voice it has. I'm racking my brain for anything that can compare... Gideon the Ninth comes to mind for its mix of unreliable narrator, worldbuilding density, and unexpected weird humor, but it ain't Moby-Dick.
It's so weird! "Being the president of a temperance organization, he only drinks the tepid tears of orphans." I don't know Gideon the Ninth, I'll check it out.
