You could read that quotation as a critique of mainstream Hollywood storytelling too. Time to go watch an art film by somebody with a radically different background and narrative sensibility like Abbas Kiarostami, for instance.

Seth McFarlane assures the interviewer in "Entertainment Weekly" that he won't waste any tiem at the Oscars talking about "Amour" or "Beasts of the Southern Wild", since "If I get too specific about the nominated films, it may play well with the crowd in the room, but you may lose the television audience. First and foremost, the Oscars is a TV show."

(Although, I must admit, I myself sometimes ignore MLK's advice when watching Kiarostami movies, since I keep repeating to myself, "and... cut. And.... cut. And... CUT." BUT HE NEVER CUTS. I am trapped in my western ways.)

Have you seen THE WIND WILL CARRY US? The most unlikely Hollywood type told me just a few months ago that he LOVED that movie and would always think of it (spoiler alert!) whenever he couldn't get a cellphone signal.

I haven't. I need to give Kiarostami another shot.
