Check Out James's Fantastic Film Festival

Hi guys! Will I ever return to regular posting? Yes, I will! I'll have a Best of 2016 countdown soon! In the meantime, you may recall on the podcast that co-host James Kennedy mentioned the very cool film festival he hosts. Well the new season is underway, and he asked if I could post the schedule. You should all check it out, it's a lot of fun!
It’s time for the screenings of the sixth annual 90-Second Newbery Film Festival!
(Wait, what is the 90-Second Newbery? It’s an annual video contest in which kid filmmakers create movies that tell the entire stories of Newbery-winning books in about 90 seconds. Complete information about the 90-Second Newbery here.)

Here are the screening dates for 2017. (Want to bring the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival to your city? Every year it expands into more cities! Drop James a line at kennedyjames@gmail.com.)

Thanks for posting about this, Matt! I'm guessing that at least some of the cinephiles in this Cockeyed Caravan community have kids, and like to make movies. It's perfectly OK to assist your kids in making these movies--there's no rule against parental involvement!

If you want to get a sense of what a 90-Second Newbery is like, here are some of the better entries I've received over the past six years: http://90secondnewbery.com/bestof

The best entries I receive are the ones that do something weird with the material. That twist the story of the book into something you never would have guessed. For instance, here's "Charlotte's Web" done in the style of a horror movie. And "Ramona and Her Father" done in the style of a musical. I've gotten 90-Second Newberys done in the style of Claymation, and Star Wars, and even Minecraft.

The official deadline for this year has passed, but it's never too early to get cracking for next year! (And really, the deadlines are pretty relaxed. If you got something to me even now, I might be able to sneak it into some of the upcoming screenings.)
