Cockeyed Recommends: Trumbo on Audio

Hey, gang, I got an email the other day from my friend Frank:
  • I have an audio book that has been a pet project of mine at HighBridge, TRUMBO by Bruce Cook (the basis for the new Bryan Cranston film) which was the first bio of Trumbo. It’s based on first person interviews and totally engrossing. I acquired the audio rights and would love for you to check it out. Amazing insights to the screenwriting life, the blacklist, and politics that still resonate today.
And I totally agree! A great book well read. Check it out!

Fun fact: Ten years ago, Frank’s wife Karly turned to me and said, out of nowhere, “You should start a film blog and call it Cockeyed Caravan.” Five years later, I took her up on that, and here we are five years into that blog!

"The Letters of Dalton Trumbo" has a passage early on that is pure gold. I don't have the book in front of me, but I can paraphrase it pretty well.

His young daughter was in the midst of a "superlatives" phase. "That's the biggest dog I ever saw." "That's the prettiest bird in the world." During this phase, she saw her father looking at a photograph that had arrived in the mail. It was a picture of a friend's newborn son. The girl pointed at the picture of the naked baby. "That's his penis," she said.

"Yes, it is," Trumbo said.

"He's the penisest boy I ever saw!"
